Lawrence Gowan is back on Let’s Rock.
Our fourth chat, and it just keeps getting more fun and more interesting.
The interview actually took place on March 23rd, 2024, but due to a pretty major change in the band, it was decided to wait until an official announcement was made. Well, here we are, May 17, and it’s official. Lawrence’s brother, Terry, is the new bassist for STYX. Terry has been touring with Lawrence for his solo shows for close to forever, so this just fits.
Ricky Philips, the longtime bassman for STYX stepped aside about two days before this most recent chat. Although Ricky will definitely be missed, Terry will be a welcome addition to the band. He’s a great performer and stellar player.
It’s hard to believe that Lawrence Gowan has been a member of Styx for over 25 years, but here we are. Styx’ most recent album, 2021’s Crash of the Crown, was an absolute ripper, which was preceded by The Mission in 2017, which was, you guessed it, a ripper, and the band continues to perform over 100 shows a year. Later this year, Styx will hit the road for a North American tour with Foreigner, but before that, Eastern Canada gets a chance to rock with these legends.
Before Heading back to his homeland, Lawrence joined Let’s Rock for a chat about the legacy of the band, the difficulties of keeping it fresh when all the fans know what the setlis will be, the ageless Tommy Shaw, nostalgia tours (for lack of a better name), new solo Gowan music, and sooooo much more.
Not only is Lawrence Gowan one hell of a musician, he’s also an incredibly gifted story teller and all around swell dude. This is our fourth chat, and I’m already looking forward to number five.
Enjoy!!
